The last day of school before the holidays was fantastic! We wore our p.j.s and brought stuffies, played games, read books and played reindeer games in gym. We are all due for a nice long winter's nap!!! (hopefully for the next few nights before Christmas!) Happy Holidays!

It was a busy and exciting day in the grade 1 classes today. Thank you to the parents who helped out today - we could not do this without you! And then, guess who dropped by for a surprise visit.....SANTA!!!!!!!! And then to end off our day, some grade 7 students came to read us holiday stories that they had written and illustrated. The class was mesmorized by their writing! Life is sweet when you are 6!
Our math, our words of the week and our shared reading all included positional words this week. We will continue to work with these words next week in different activities. Of course there are some students who simply LOVE working with numbers! We also created some winter art pieces this week using paint and decoupage. At the end of this week, we were very tired so we had a little free time near the end of the day! The students always like this time, when they are able to chill out and do what they are in the mood to do. We are gearing up for a busy few weeks before the holidays!
Where is the time going? We have been hard at work this week learning about short vowels, money, making connections to books we read, reading alone, reading with partners, working in small groups, engaging in drama activities, doing winter art and starting cooperative games in gym. Whew!!!! Aren't you tired just thinking about it? Reading time each day is very exciting! I am so thrilled to see how much the children love reading and often groan when time is up. We have read many books by the author/illustrator Mo Willms (Piggy and Elephant series and Pigeon series). These books are silly and fun and the children are enthralled with them. On Friday, I went around to ask if they happened to have a Mo Willms book in their book box because there were none left on the shelf. Almost everyone had one - take a look! Mo Willms....we think you rock!
We are continuing to talk about time and temperature in our measurement strand. This week, we also began talking about measuring money amounts. We are exploring Canadian money by sorting, categorizing and trading coins. We are learning to make money amounts to 10 cents. Many students are ready to make money amounts higher than this. They will be challenged at individuals levels in this area. Here are some math pics from this week.... This week, we also finished up our Seasons Book. We have worked for a few weeks, creating our our book about our senses through the seasons. Today, we had the opportunity to read them to one of the Kindergarten classes and to the other grade 1 class. The students were very proud of their work! Here are a few beautiful pictures of students engaged in a good book after they have completed their work. I am so excited at how many children choose to READ when they have finished work!!! I hope this is the beginning of a lifetime love of reading!!!!
We have been working on measuring temperature and time. We check our thermometer every morning and we are noticing the change in temperature from day to day. The strange thing is that it has been getting WARMER each day. I am sure tomorrow will end that warming trend and the children will see a much lower number on the thermometer on Monday!
We have been using the calendar to talk about measuring time in days, weeks, months and year and the clock to talk about measuring time in seconds, minutes and hours. The students are learning to tell time to the hour. Later in the year, they will learn time to the half hour. Here are a few pics from this week.... We have been discussing how kindness makes others feel good and in turn, makes us feel good too. We are filling our class bucket with kind acts and thinking about ways we can be kind to friends, siblings, parents, grandparents, teachers, pets etc.
Here are some of the children's suggestions: when someone falls, help them up when someone is alone, ask them to play when your parents are busy, ask if you can help help with your little brother/sister give hugs and snuggles share your toys with your brother/sister tell your friend they look nice give someone a bandaid if they hurt themselves make a gift for your friend when someone spills something, help them clean it up clean up your room and surprise your mom and dad smile at people let your friend go first make cookies for your friend tell your grandma/grandpa that you love them help clean up say nice words to people when someone is feeling down, think of ways to pick them up Pretty smart children!!!! Try to tune into the kind things you see people doing and draw your child's attention to these words and actions. Let them know the impact their kindness can have on the world. We started the week off with a high energy day on Halloween. The students enjoyed our Zumbathon with their friends! Many also enjoyed the pumpkin pie that followed! We also had some fun with Estimation Station and representing numbers in math this week... And some fun with leaf art... And a whole lot of fun creating our new bulletin board....Walking through the Seasons! This was a project that required planning and teamwork. The students did an amazing job in their groups, planning and creating together. Check out our new bulletin board outside our classroom if you are in the school.
Autumn is a great time for pumpkin fun! This week, we read some pumpkin books, made some pumpkin art, tasted some pumpkin bread and participated in some pumpkin gym activities! We love pumpkins! Bring on the pumpkin pie! We also started our Daily 5 Language centres this week. Each day, your child will participate in one of the 5 centres (writing, Raz Kids on the iPad, word work practise, partner read or working with the teacher on reading/writing skills). There are other times in the week that they will work on these skills as well, but this special time each day is devoted to developing independence in their abilities to use time wisely to practise these skills. The students did extremely well this week. The room was calm and quiet, the students were focused and they were all busy doing their jobs. It was such a wonderful and enjoyable time each day. It is so nice to see the children's independence growing each day. Take a look.... In Social Studies, the students are studying rules, roles and responsibilities. Mrs. Baillargeon was talking to the students about rules that are different for them now as compared to when they were in kindergarten. She then had them predict rules that might be different for grade 8 students. The grade 8 students then visited our classroom and shared their rules with our students. The grade 1 students were shocked that the grade 8 students were allowed to chew gum! Together, the grade 8's and the grade 1's made a poster for a rule they would like to implement at Anderdon school. The posters will be on the blog next week. Below is a few pictures of the classes working together on their posters: See next week's blog for their finished work!!!
Yummy! Yummy! Yummy! We had such a tasty day on Thursday. Thank you for sending in apples, money, ingredients and supplies! All the contributions helped tremendously! Just take a look at how busy we were! |
