March Units:
March always offers a mix of weather. Please ensure your child has a pair of runners for indoors and outdoors over the spring as it sometimes tends to be muddy outdoors. Happy spring and happy spring break next week!
This is what we plan to cover in March:
Language:
-word choice and vocabulary in texts read aloud - penny words, quarter words, loonie words
-fluency and expression in reading
-main idea in a text
-responding to texts read aloud - expressing personal thoughts and feelings around books with the theme of not giving up and working to the best of your ability
- long vowels words with silent e at the end, vowel pairs, and Y at the end of a word
-using editing codes and learning to edit work
-continuing to write simple recounts using question words as a guide (who, what, when, where, why)
-writing simple "how to" directions, focusing on giving specific instructions in sequence, using key words (FIRST, THEN, NEXT, LAST), trading out "boring" words for more interesting vocabulary that helps a reader visualize exactly what to do (i.e., instead of "Put chocolate in the milk", you can use, "Squeeze the chocolate sauce into the glass of milk.")
Mathematics
We have wrapped up our unit on addition and subtraction, however, this is a good skill to practise with your child at home. Not only do they need to learn facts but they are expected to UNDERSTAND when one would use addition or subtraction when approaching a math problem (i.e., "In this problem, they are bringing MORE dogs to the park. That means I need to add because if more dogs come, there would be a larger number at the park.") Also, playing addition and subtraction games with your child is great practice (i.e., "I am thinking of a number that is 3 less than 10.")
We have started a unit on Data Management. I have explained to the students that DATA means information and MANAGEMENT means how we organize and make sense of that information. We are collecting data by asking other people questions and then working on making simple tally charts, concrete graphs, picture graphs and bar graphs based on our data. We are also working on answering questions based on our charts and graphs.
Science/Social Studies
We are continuing our energy unit, and will be focusing on energy usage and conservation in March. Students will be asked to design a device at home that uses and produces energy. Information will be sent home on this in the first week of March.
In Social Studies, the students are continuing to study the local community until March Break.
Art
Element of design - colour (primary and secondary/ warm and cool) and contrast (light and dark) - we experimented with line in February rather than colour.
Physical Education and Health
-bouncing objects in place and while travelling
-skipping
- the 4 food groups using Canada's food guide

December Units
December is always a very busy and very exciting month. We will be participating in many fun activities (see home page), making many crafts, reading holiday books and singing holiday songs. We also plan on squeezing some work in there!!!! Below are some of the expectations we plan to achieve:
Language:
In reading, we have been working in small groups at our reading levels. We are talking about different decoding strategies to figure out new or tricky words (picture, first letter, stretch out the sounds, skip and go back after reading the rest of the sentence, find little words or chunks you know inside the word, break it into chunks). We are also talking about how a reader thinks about the text as they read to see if they understand the story or the information.
As a whole group, we have been making connections from our own experiences to the text. We will soon move onto making connections to other texts or to movies/tv shows we have seen before. In December, we will also begin the comprehension strategy of prediction before, during and after reading.
In writing, the students have worked on expanding their ideas to include a few sentences in their journals. We still continue to focus on capitals, punctuation, spaces and spelling strategies. We have started learning about lists and webs as organizers for writing and the students have made some of their own in their writing books. We are also writing about connections we have to texts and about our favourite parts of books.
We have been learning about short vowel sounds and will continue to do so throughout December. Please continue to practise the words of the week (and review previous weeks). It is especially important if your child has difficulty recognizing them quickly. These are high frequency words which we see and use often and therefore the automaticity of these words are so important to help with fluency in reading and writing for your child.
Mathematics:
In November, we studied time (to the hour), temperature and money (identifying coins and values, making money amounts to 20 cents). If your child has struggled with these concepts, I would have written a note in his/her agenda, letting you know they need to practise. Please ensure, they do practise these skills, as later in the year, we will be building on these skills and they need a solid understanding first. I will also continue to practise these concepts at school with the students that experienced difficulty.
We will be moving onto positional language (up, down, on, off, over, under, beside, behind, above, left, right, between) and 2 dimensional shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, hexagon, octagon). We will do a variety of hands on activities during this unit. It is usually an enjoyable unit so this is a perfect month for it!
Health and Physical Education:
We are focusing on healthy behaviours including taking care of ourselves physically, emotionally and mentally as well as how we treat others. These are the curriculum expectations for this unit:
-demonstrate an understanding of factors that contribute to healthy development
-demonstrate the ability to apply health knowledge and living skills to make reasoned decisions and take appropriate actions relating to themselves and others
-demonstrate the ability to make connections that relate to health and well-being – how their choices and behaviours affect both themselves and others, and how factors in the world around them affect their own and others’ health and well-being.
In phys. ed., the students are participating in cooperative and team building activities. The purpose of these games is to get the students to work together to achieve a goal, to get great exercise and to have fun in the process.
Art and Drama:
We are working on a variety of Winter art pieces using different tools, materials and techniques.
In drama, the students are identifying characters and roles. They are participating in a variety of games and activities that allow them to use their voice, body and facial expressions to convey messages and communicate in different ways.

October Units
Language:
We continue to work on letters and sounds and beginning sounds of words. We have been talking about the difference between a letter, a word and a sentence. We have learned that sentences: have an uppercase letter at the beginning, have spaces between the words, have punctuation at the end (period, question mark or exclamation mark) and they MAKE SENSE!!! In our journals we are working on writing sentences that tell about ourselves such as our interests, activities and feelings.
We have been reading poems, songs and short stories in our readers and engaging in activities with them such as finding rhyming words, finding repeating words, substituting words and sequencing the story with sentence strips.
We read independently each day and the children have their own book box where they select 5 books a week to read and practise. They are doing very well with this routine and seem to enjoy the calm of this time. I have now finished my diagnostic reading assessments on each student. Beginning in a few weeks, I will be working with students in small groups on guided reading and writing instruction. During this time of the day (which we call Daily 5), some students will be working with the teacher while other students will be working in language centres such as work work, reading with a partner, listening to reading, writing, and reading on the iPads. The students will be trained on these centres over the next 2 weeks.
Our words of the week will begin October 17th.
Our Home Reading Program will begin October 17th.
Mathematics
We have wrapped up our Sorting and Patterning unit. Thank you for signing and returning these units to me.
Our second unit is Number Relationships. As explained in the blog, we will focus on number recognition, formation and counting. However, this unit really focuses on the understanding of value and relationships to other numbers. When a child sees 5 objects, he/she learns to recognize automatically that this is 5, that 5 can be broken down into other numbers (ie. 2 and 3, 4 and 1 etc.), that it remains 5 even if the objects are moved into different arrangements in front of them, that 5 is a little less than 7 but a lot less than 20 etc. This in depth understanding of the value of a number is extremely beneficial to a student's growth and confidence in mathematics, and to his/her ability to apply numbers to more challenging concepts as they arise.
We will also begin NUMBER TALKS this week as our math warm up. I have been using this program (written by Sherry Parrish) for the past 2 years and have seen outstanding growth in my students in numeracy. We will be doing Number Talks before most math lessons for 5 - 10 minutes. I will write more about this program in months to come. I am sure the children will talk about it at home, once the routine is established.
Science
Our first science unit is Daily and Seasonal Changes. The overall expectations are:
1. assess the impact of daily and seasonal changes on living things, including humans
2. investigate daily and seasonal changes
3. demonstrate an understanding of what daily and seasonal changes are and of how these changes affect living things
We will do a variety of activities such as listening to texts, watching videos, outdoor learning, partner and group work, experiments, making a poster and a wrap up project toward the end of the project where children will make a display of one of the seasons of their choice (more info to follow).
Social Studies
Mrs. Baillargeon teaches our class Social Studies 3 days a week. She is beginning the Heritage and Identity Unit which focuses on changing roles and responsibilities. The overall expectations from the curriculum are:
1. Application: describe some of the ways in which people’s roles, relationships, and responsibilities relate to who they are and what their situation is, and how and why changes in circumstances might affect people’s roles, relationships, and responsibilities as well as their sense of self (FOCUS ON: Continuity and Change)
2. Inquiry: use the social studies inquiry process to investigate some aspects of the interrelationship between their identity/sense of self, their different roles, relationships, and responsibilities, and various situations in their daily lives (FOCUS ON: Interrelationships)
3. Understanding Context: demonstrate an understanding that they and other people have different roles, relationships, and responsibilities, and that all people should be treated with respect, regardless of their roles, relationships, and responsibilities (FOCUS ON: Significance)
Physical Education
We have been focusing on listening and following instructions in the gym. This month we will be working on location skills (different ways to move) and cooperative games. A reminder that physical education is on Day 1 and Day 3. Students are expected to have running shoes at school. Please remind them not to wear jewellery on these days.
Art and Music
In art this month, we will be taking full advantage of the beautiful colours and offerings of Autumn. Our art pieces will focus on Autumn and Halloween, using a few different materials and techniques such as collage, paint wash and sponge painting.
In Music, students are learning how to play simple patterns using the Boom Whackers.
Such as....
Tah, Tah, Tee Tee, Rest Repeat....
Happy Autumn!!!

September Units
Language
We will be reviewing letters and sounds and focusing on printing letters properly.
Our word focus this month will be our classmates names. We will talk about how letters form words and words form sentences. Our writing focus will be creating simple sentences with capitalization, punctuation, spacing and using spelling strategies. We will be writing in our journals and beginning to write simple lists.
Each day the students will listen to and discuss a few different types of texts. They will be given 10 - 15 minutes of independent reading as well. We have a large classroom library with a variety of books at different levels. In my experience, this has always been a favourite time of the day for many students.
We will be reading shared poems together and classroom readers in small groups.
Although nightly homework is not recommended for grade 1 students, it is very important that children read daily and hear books read aloud. For this reason, our primary division runs home reading programs. Our class will start the home reading program in October.
Mathematics
Unit 1: Sorting and Patterning
recognizing attributes that objects have in common (ie. colour, shape, size, texture), sort and classify objects, identify a sorting rule, identify, create and extend a pattern, describe a pattern rule
You can practise these concepts at home by:
-sorting silverware, laundry, toys, books, etc and talk about why objects go together
-make simple patterns with objects from home (ie. coloured markers, toys, sticks and stones, pencils and pens)
-make a simple pattern and have your child extend the pattern
-find patterns in the environment around you (in the house, stores, and in the natural environment)
Science and Social Studies
We are beginning the year with an All About Me unit to get the children better aquainted with one another. Then, we will move into a general introduction of what science is, who scientists are, tools they use and subjects they study.
Physical Education
Our first unit will focus on listening and following directions in the gym as well as cooperative games. Please ensure that students wear running shoes on gym days OR have a pair of indoor runner left at school. On days when we do not have gym, we will have DPA - which is a physical activity break in the classroom or outside. Students are required to wear running shoes for this as well. We will know our physical education timetable when our schedule is finalized next week.
We will be reviewing letters and sounds and focusing on printing letters properly.
