Everyone had an opportunity to demonstrate how their device works and to talk about it to the class. They answered questions and then prepared it for the ENERGY MUSEUM where we all experimented with the devices. Check out the slideshow below!
What an exciting day it was! The students were very enthusiastic about their science projects and eager to share them with the class. I was very impressed with the variety and the student's ability to explain how they made their devices. Something I am really excited about is how much the students have grown in their ability to work together with others and problem solve when things do not always work out as planned. I enjoy listening to them make suggestions and help each other out. The students have been working in partners and small groups all year to complete tasks. They have come so far since the fall. Here are a few pictures of our class working together this week! This past Tuesday was Rock your Socks day in support of Downs Syndrome. Look at all of our funky socks! ROCK ON, ANDERDON!!!
Our week was jam packed with learning - so we are all ready for Spring Break! In science, we brought in toys and talked about how they worked. We discussed input and output of energy with the toys. We discovered that many toys use batteries to move, light up and make sounds. In math, we collected data from our peers through surveys and learned to make tally charts and picture graphs. In art, we learned how the secondary colours are made by mixing the primary colours. In writing, we talked about verbs being action words. We also talked about using interesting words when we give instruction on how to do a task. Some students wrote about "How to set up an Aquarium" after reading "Domenic's Aquarium in a small group." Some interesting words that were used in the instructions were: settle, shipwreck, bubbles, float, pump and heater, gravel. Then, as a class, we wrote about how to make hot chocolate. Some interesting words that were used by some students were: pour, mix, creamy, sprinkle, carefully, include. To help us visualize our instructions, we first made hot chocolate together and enjoyed it as a class! The students were really inspired to write this week. They are all excited about being able to form sentences and wanted to write sentences on the white boards. "Go ahead!" I told them and they turned into writing machines!
We have been studying energy in science. This week, we focused on energy input and energy out put. We learned that objects and living things need some sort of energy input in order to work. These may include food, electricity, gasoline, wind, water, batteries, or muscular power. When they use this energy, they produce energy in the form of heat, light, movement or sound. We were energy scientists this week, studying objects that use and produce energy. A tasty way to learn about input and output... Data management in math....collecting information and making graphs Procedural Writing... Giving simple instructions in sequence using FIRST, THEN, NEXT, LAST. We are focusing on being specific and also using some interesting vocabulary when describing.
This year's carnaval was organized by our 2 french teachers. It was a wonderful day of games, activities, food and fellowship for our students. It was so nice to see the older students working with the younger Mustangs and the fun they were having together. I managed to get around to get some pictures around the school...it was a fantastic day! Le Duc and La Duchesse... A cuddle with Bonhomme...
Can you believe we have made it to the 100th day of school this year!!! We were engaged in many activities to celebrate 100 day. We are learning that 100 can be broken down into many different equal groups (i.e., 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50).
In math, we have been discussing adding as joining together or constructing. We are playing with different strategies that help us add most efficiently. Some of our strategies are: - using counters - using number lines or hundred charts - using fingers - counting on -skip counting - knowing it in our head We have noticed that we sometimes use different strategies at different times depending on the question given. For example, we might not use fingers for larger numbers. We have also learned about the effect zero has when added to a number and how you easily add 1 to any number. This week, we will begin working with subtraction. Most days we begin with a warm up in math to get our brains thinking. Here is an example of one of our warmups from last week: Working together with the help of counters and their classmates, this is what they came up with! They also noticed the pattern in the equations!
For the past 2 weeks, we have been working on The Mitten and The Hat by Jan Brett. We have worked on a variety of activities with these 2 texts. The children also enjoyed hearing Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett as well. Many of my photos were deleted by accident. These are the photos that I could salvage from this week.... Then, we finished off the week with some wonderful vegetable soup made by Mrs. Cliff. It was lovely to see the children lined up with their bowls and spoons waiting for some soup and bread- like a scene out of Oliver Twist!!
The books are pouring in! So far we have 167 in our class!!!! We are really going to make some children happy with a new library. I've explained to the students how they are helping other children to learn by donating books that they are no longer using. This is a great way to show caring for others....even when we do not know the children who will benefit from our kindness. Here are a few pics from this week..... "I tried archery for the first time and I hit a bullseye!"
The students were really intrigued. Many asked where you could go to try this. Our classmate told us he went to Amherstburg Sportsman Association. We wrapped up our unit on shapes this week with many hands on activities. We built, composed, compared and experimented with 2D shapes and discussed attributes and where we find these shapes around us.
